Gajda receives national award for her higher ed law scholarship

Professor Amy Gajda was honored with the William A. Kaplin Award for Excellence in Higher Education Law and Policy Scholarship.

Professor Amy Gajda received the William A. Kaplin Award for Excellence in Higher Education Law and Policy Scholarship Feb. 11 at the National Conference on Law and Higher Education, organized by Stetson University Law School in Orlando, Florida.

The award honors a scholar for outstanding published works on education law embracing the intersection of law and policy.

Gajda, an internationally recognized expert in media law, privacy law and higher education law, has been a leader in legal and journalism education. Her books include The First Amendment Bubble: How Privacy and Paparazzi Threaten a Free Press and The Trials of Academe, and she co-authored Mass Media Law and The Law and Higher Education. She has published invited opinion pieces in The New York Times, Slate, the New York Daily News and other publications. 

Gajda also frequently comments on media law, privacy and press rights in print and broadcast media around the world. She was a journalist then practiced law in Washington, D.C., before entering teaching at the University of Illinois in both the law and journalism schools. She joined the Tulane University Law School faculty in 2010 and was named the Class of 1937 Professor of Law in 2016. She has chaired the Association of American Law Schools’ Section on Defamation and Privacy and its Section on Mass Communication, and led the Law and Policy Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.
