Commander Brian McNamara is a Coast Guard officer and judge advocate. He currently serves as the Deputy Staff Judge Advocate for the Eighth Coast Guard District headquartered in New Orleans, Louisiana. In this role he supports the Staff Judge Advocate in providing legal support to Coast Guard operational units and their people for the Gulf Coast, from the Florida panhandle to the maritime border with Mexico, and the Western Rivers including the entire Mississippi, Ohio, and Missouri River systems. He holds the degrees of Master of Laws in Admiralty from Tulane Law School, Juris Doctor from the College of William & Mary, Master of Public Administration from Old Dominion University, and Bachelor of Science from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. In previous tours he served as the first attorney-advisor for the Coast Guard’s Marine Casualty Investigations Center of Expertise, as an instructor at the Coast Guard’s International Maritime Officer School, and as a Deck Watch Officer on a medium endurance cutter conducting counter-narcotics patrols in the Caribbean Sea and fisheries enforcement patrols in the waters off of the New England coast.
