Federal Legislation and Legislative Drafting

The goal of this mini course is to make law students into more informed attorneys, citizens, and voters, by increasing their understanding of how to read and understand Federal bills and laws. Students will learn how to locate and analyze Federal bills and laws and evaluate some of the strengths and weaknesses of our legislative system as it currently operates. Whenever possible, the actual text of bills, laws, and committee reports will be used for purposes of example or analysis. The bulk of this discussion will be from the perspective of the House of Representatives, although Senate procedures and culture will also be touched upon. As part of the course, students will conduct legislative research on a topic, draft a bill for introduction, and prepare a committee re-port for such bill. (1 Credit)
