Tulane Law School invites all alumni to join in a reception following a group swearing-in ceremony to the U.S. Supreme Court Bar later this summer.

The event, following the Court swearing-in on June 1, 2023 is being hosted by Chris Johnsen (L'85), a senior partner for Jones Walker’s Washington, D.C. office who heads their Government Relations Group. During the reception, which will be held from 6-8 p.m. at the Metropolitan Club, 1700 H Street NW in Washington, there will be a "fireside chat" with Retired U.S. Army Major General and former Clerk of the U.S. Supreme Court William Suter (L'62). Suter and Law Dean David Meyer will discuss "An Insider’s Perspective on Practice Before the U.S. Supreme Court" with those gathered.

Suter attended Tulane Law while serving in the military and his posts included commandant of the Judge Advocate General’s School and chief judge of the Army’s Court of Criminal Appeals. He led the Army’s JAG Corps and then spent 22 years as the Clerk of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Volunteering for service in Vietnam, he earned a Bronze Star and Distinguished Service Medal. President George H.W. Bush nominated Suter as Supreme Court Clerk, and he ran that office, helping modernize court operations, from 1991 to 2013. He has served on the Tulane Law Review advisory board, and the journal in 2014 honored him as its inaugural Alumnus of the Year. He is a member of the Class of 2017 Tulane Law Hall of Fame.

In previous years, Tulane Law alumni have been sworn into the nation’s highest court and had the opportunity to meet Chief Justice John Roberts as well as the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Justice Samuel Alito, both of whom taught in the Tulane Summer Abroad Programs in prior years.

The Court recently resumed group swearings-in after pausing them during the Covid pandemic..
