Reception May 2 Honors Black Alumni

New Orleans law firm Stone Pigman Walter Wittman will host the first in a series of events on May 2 to honor the 50th anniversary of the first African-American to graduate from Tulane Law School.

 The event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at 909 Poydras Street, Suite 3150 New Orleans, LA 70112.

Wednesday night’s reception for Black Law Alumni kicks-off a year-long celebration of the 50th anniversary of the graduation of Michael Starks (L’68), Tulane Law School’s first African American law graduate. Accomplishments and excellence in career and service within Tulane’s black law alumni community will also be celebrated.

Starks, a native New Orleanian, graduated law school in May of 1968, as year that marked a turning point in American history – the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy all motivated a new generation to rewrite the future. Michael went on to other ‘firsts,’ including serving as the first African-American lawyer in the City Attorney’s Office.

These graduates, like Starks, have gone on to build careers of distinction – leading law firms, running corporations, becoming judges or public servants, joining the academic ranks and becoming entrepreneurs – all the while enhancing communities across the nation.

In recognition of the importance of this historic milestone, and in gratitude and appreciation of all black alumni who have followed Starks’ footsteps, the law school invites alumni to network at events around the country and get involved in supporting current and future programs for diversity and equity.
