Biography

Adeno Addis holds the W. R. Irby Chair and is also the W. Ray Forrester Professor of Public and Constitutional Law at Tulane University School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar whose expertise spans a range of areas, but primarily focusing on human rights, constitutional law, international law, and political and legal theory. He has taught at other law schools both in the United States and in other countries such as Australia, Germany, Hong Kong (SAR), and Japan. He has delivered many public lectures at many other institutions of higher learning, including the University of Antwerp (Belgium), City University of Hong Kong, University of Hong Kong, University of Passau (Germany), and the University of Texas (Austin).

Addis is also an award-winning teacher. He received the Felix Frankfurter Award for Distinguished Teaching in 2020. His current research agenda includes a major project that attempts to develop a dignity-based theory of belonging to a political community by examining the scope and depth of two phenomena that subject persons worldwide to the indignity of exclusion, expulsion, and even worse: the phenomena of statelessness and internal displacement. He is also engaged in a project that explores the nature and future of constitutionalism in fractured societies. Although his earlier work has explored constitutionalism and deliberative democracy in deeply fractured societies generally, his current focus is on Ethiopia and the constitutional structure that has established a “nation of nations.”
