Biography

Ashwini Velchamy is a Visiting Clinical Assistant Professor of Law with the Women’s Prison Project, which represents criminalized survivors of intimate partner violence. Most WPP clients are women who were wrongfully convicted for actions they took in self-defense or under the coercion of their abusers. Velchamy's work includes supervising students in the direct representation of criminalized survivors in various stages of criminal proceedings, including post-conviction litigation and pardon hearings.

Prior to joining Tulane, Velchamy worked at the Capital Appeals Project in New Orleans, representing clients on death row in all stages of post-trial litigation, including pardon matters. She also consulted on several Miller v. Alabama cases for children facing life without parole sentences and represented clients who had received life without parole sentences as juveniles in their resentencing hearings under Montgomery v. Louisiana. In addition, she assisted trial attorneys across multiple parishes in Louisiana with writ applications to Louisiana appellate courts.
