Legal history of Louisiana and the Floridas (September 2016)
The Eason-Weinmann Center and The Portalis Society are organizing a conference that brings together historians and legal historians to discuss the laws, customs, and institutions of Spanish Louisiana and the Floridas. The presentations of the 12 speakers are linked to all aspects of law and culture including doctrine, personalities, property, politics, and extra-legal norms. The event will take place on November 4, 2016 in Weinmann Hall, Faculty Lounge, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Decentralization in Tunisia (December 2015)
On 16 October 2015, Professor Fedtke discussed developments in Tunisia with Dr. Habib Lejmi, representative of the Ennahdha party in Germany, on occasion of a round table organized by Tunisia in Transition, a group of young researchers from Tunisia and Germany. The event took place in Passau/Germany. Professor Fedtke has followed the Arab Spring closely and worked with members of constitutional assemblies, political parties and NGOs in the area of human rights protection, judicial review and multi-level governance in Iraq, Egypt, Libya and Tunisia for more than a decade. He is currently assisting ATIDE (Association Tunisienne pour l'ntégrité et la démocratie des élections) in an analysis of decentralization efforts in Tunisia.
A Tulane lawyer on the bench in Luxembourg: reflections on the work of the courts of the European Union (November 2015)
Ian Forrester QC, Judge for the United Kingdom on the General Court of the European Union, will deliver the 2015/2016 Eason-Weinmann Lecture. Judge Forrester is a graduate of Tulane Law School MCL (Master in Civil Law) and a former partner at White & Case in Brussels. He will speak about his experience as a Tulane lawyer on the bench in Luxembourg and reflect on the work of the courts of the European Union. The event will take place on March 30, 2016 in Weinmann Hall.

Berlin Summer School 2016 (November 2015)
Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito is set to take part in Tulane's Intercultural Negotiation and Mediation Summer School in Berlin next summer. Professor Lela Love (Cardozo) has also accepted an invitation to join the team of instructors as Distinguished ADR Practitioner in 2016. Finally, the curriculum will include the mediation of political disputes as a new optional component during the second week. This new segment complements the core elements of of the Program (negotiation and mediation) and a second optional segment on international arbitration. International experts will introduce participants to the specific characteristics and dynamics of political disputes and share their firsthand experience in the management of constitutional negotiations, peacekeeping missions, labor disputes, conflicts over environmental protection, and other highly controversial and public processes. Teaching formats will include lectures, panel discussions, and case studies.
Hein Kötz receives honorary degree from Tulane (March 2015)
Professor Hein Kötz, a former appellate court judge and former director of the Max Planck Institute of Comparative Law and International Private Law in Hamburg/Germany, will receive an honorary degree from Tulane University on occasion of this year's commencement ceremony in May. Professor Kötz, who has close professional ties with many colleagues at Tulane Law School, was a member of the Federal Commission on the Reform of German Contract Law, president of the International Association of Legal Science, a member of the board of directors for the German Association of Comparative Law, and founding dean of Hamburg's Bucerius Law School. He has authored approximately 150 law review articles and three books, including the seminal work Introduction to Comparative Law (with Konrad Zweigert). Professor Kötz gave the Center's annual Eason-Weinmann Lecture in 2011.
Professor Dr. Bernhard Schlink to give Eason-Weinmann Lecture 2014/2015 (February 2015)
The Eason-Weinmann Lecture 2014-2015 will be given by Professor Dr. Bernhard Schlink of Berlin's Humboldt University Faculty of Law. Professor Schlink, a former judge of the State Constitutional Court of Northrhine-Westphalia, is one of Germany's most distinguished experts on constitutional and public international law, and acknowledged for his contributions in the areas of legal philosophy and jurisprudence. He is a Visiting Professor at the Cardozo School of Law and an Honorary Fellow of St. Anne's College, Oxford.
Professor Schlink is also one of Germany's most successful novelists and the country's first author to head the bestseller list of the New York Times. The Reader (Der Vorleser), published 1995, was turned into an Oscar-winning movie with Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes in 2008. The volume was followed by several other well-received novels and collections of short stories including Self's Punishment (2004), Self's Deception (2007), Summer Lies (2012), and Guilt about the Past (2013).
Professor Schlink's lecture, which will reflect on notions of justice (Gerechtigkeit), is scheduled for Tuesday, 24 March 2015, at 5 p.m. in the Gauthier Appellate Moot Court Room (Room 110 of John Giffen Weinmann Hall) on Tulane's Uptown Campus (6329 Freret Street) and will be followed by a reception in the Law School's Berkett Multipurpose Room.
