The impact of Hurricane Ida has touched many of our faculty, staff and students, and we know you have many questions about the next few weeks. The following should help you navigate the coming weeks, and make plans accordingly. While the Tulane campus remains closed for clean up at this time, the Uptown campus (including the Law School) will reopen on Monday, September 27.
We will make updates here frequently so please check it for class information.
Consistent with the University’s announcements, all Law School classes are cancelled through September 12. Law School classes will then be shifted temporarily to Zoom, starting Monday, September 13 through Sept. 25.
September 13-25: Zoom Only. Law classes will be conducted exclusively on Zoom.
September 27-October 8: Hybrid Classes. On Monday, September 27, the Law School will resume in-person instruction on campus, along with the rest of the University. All students are strongly encouraged to make arrangements to be back in the classroom by September 27 if at all possible. At the same time, recognizing that this will not be possible for everyone, accommodations will be made for faculty and students who cannot be present in New Orleans during this period. Faculty who cannot return to New Orleans by this date may continue to teach their classes remotely during this period as needed; and students facing similar obstacles will be allowed to attend and participate in all classes remotely during this period. Thus, for the two-week period between September 27-October 8, classes will be conducted in a hybrid manner just as they were last academic year because of Covid.
October 11-15: Fall Break: The Law School will have its Fall Break, as previously scheduled, from October 11-15. The law school is not following the university's Fall Break schedule for undergraduates.
October 18-December 3: Fully In-Person Instruction: Beginning after the Law School’s Fall Break, on Monday, October 18, the Law School will revert to fully in-person instruction on the same terms that we began our semester before the storm.
Please be assured that we will do all we can to support you and make the coming weeks as seamless as possible under the circumstances. While we have been assured that most of Orleans Parish will have electricity and cable by the start of our online classes, we recognize that some may have difficulties. The University understands that we are eager to reopen Weinmann Hall for use by those who cannot access WiFi at home, and senior University leadership has pledged to do so as soon as it can be safely arranged. In the meantime, if you encounter difficulties with internet access for classes next week, please contact Dean Gaunt. We are presently reaching out to some local law firms to see if space for remote classwork can be arranged until Weinmann Hall is reopened.
If you are experiencing other hardships, please note that the Law School is also raising emergency aid funds for law students facing hardships caused by the storm to supplement the University aid. Also refer to the university's messages about additional help beyond what the law school offers. You can find that information here: https://tulane.edu/forward If you need assistance or have questions about any of this, please contact Dean Gaunt. We want to do anything we can to help.
