Laura Huomo is a Senior Research Fellow of the Center and serves on the Global Research Council. She co-leads with Drake Hernandez the Center’s research and educational program focused on the challenges and opportunities the world faces in developing, commercializing and financing hydrogen and other alternative fuels, CCUS and related energy markets.
Ms. Huomo is a partner in the Real Estate & Infrastructure Group of the Bird & Bird law firm in Helsinki, where she heads the Nordic Energy and Infrastructure Practice. Her research and professional interests focus on low-carbon and renewable fuels (including green and RFNBO hydrogen) projects involving complex contract structures very often embracing market-first applications of ever-changing regulatory schemes and permitting structures as well as legal risk matrices prepared to guard the integrity of the project she co-leads at the Center.
She advises governments, municipalities and their energy companies, investors and project developers, on various contract structures from initial contract planning and permitting strategies to single offtake/PPA agreements and bankability studies. She utilizes her over 25-year legal career both in the energy field as well as the capital market space to make strategies for her client’s successful projects and aims to always be two steps ahead in making the project structure flexible enough to stand the changes in the developing energy regulation.
Ms. Huomo has a PhD from the University of Helsinki Faculty of law (Project Financing of Natural Gas Pipelines, a Study on Natural Gas Pipeline Project Financing under financial law and law of security interests) and is a frequent speaker in various international seminars including Gastech and various others. She is the Chair of the Nordic Board of the International Project Finance Association (IPFA).
Ms. Huomo holds an LL.D, and an LL.Lic in Law from University of Helsinki, and a Master of Laws Degree form University of Michigan Law School. She is licensed to practice law both in Finland and in New York.
