Following an expansive international search, Tulane Law School welcomed five new faculty members this summer.
The new faculty include three highly accomplished scholars recruited from other law schools, a new Clinical Instructor in Tulane’s Domestic Violence Clinic, and a new Forrester Fellow teaching legal research and writing.
“These recruitments represent a significant investment in the strength of our faculty and will bring to Tulane impressive experience, expertise, and scholarly energy,” Dean David Meyer said.
The three new members of Tulane Law’s tenure-track faculty include:
Jeremy W. Bock, joins Tulane as the Charles Lugenbuhl Associate Professor of Law. Before joining the law school, he was an Associate Professor of Law at the University of Memphis, and is a rising star in intellectual property law. A graduate of the University of California Berkeley Law School and a two-time graduate of MIT in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Professor Bock clerked at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and worked in-house for a multinational semiconductor company. His scholarship focuses on patent law, drawing insights from behavioral economics, cognitive psychology, and management science. His most recent article, “Behavioral Claim Construction,“ forthcoming in the Minnesota Law Review, was selected for presentation at the 2017 Stanford/Harvard/Yale Junior Faculty Forum, the most prestigious scholarly venue for early-career scholars.
Kristin N. Johnson, currently Professor of Law at Seton Hall University and Director of its Program on Regulation, Governance and Risk Management, will join Tulane as the McGlinchey Stafford Professor of Law. Johnson is nationally recognized as a leading scholar of financial risk management and corporate law. She earned her undergraduate degree in Comparative Political Economy at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and her J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School, where she was an editor on the Michigan Law Review. Both before and after law school, she worked in finance in New York City, first as an analyst with Goldman, Sachs & Co. and later as a vice president and assistant general counsel with J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. She also practiced corporate law for two years, in New York City and London, and was a law clerk for Judge Joseph Greenaway on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. She has been a Visiting Professor at the University of California-Irvine, University of Florida, University of Illinois, and Washington & Lee University Law Schools.
- Khrista McCarden, currently Associate Professor of Law at Pepperdine University, will join Tulane later this summer as the Hoffman Fuller Associate Professor of Tax Law. McCarden earned both her B.A. and J.D. from Harvard with honors. She clerked on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in New York City and practiced tax law for six years with major law firms in Los Angeles, London, and Paris. Her scholarship focuses on tax law and policy, especially international taxation and the tax treatment of charitable giving.
The string of tenured or tenure-track hires follows the appointment in January 2018 of Kim Talus, considered one of the top energy scholars in Europe, as the inaugural James McCulloch Chair in Energy Law and founding director of the Tulane Center for Energy Law. The recruitment of Talus and Sirja-Leena Penttinen, another European energy law scholar, as assistant director of the new Center, are part of an ambitious plan to strengthen Tulane’s leadership in energy law, complementing the school’s longstanding leadership in the related fields of environmental, international, and maritime law.
