Admiralty Law Institute Brought the World’s Maritime Experts to Tulane

Tulane Law School welcomed maritime law professionals from around the world to campus March 25–27 for the 31st biennial Admiralty Law Institute (ALI), the oldest and largest continuing legal education program devoted to maritime law. This year’s program, “Above the Plimsoll Line,” explored timely issues including autonomous vessels, marine insurance, vessel documentation and financing, and the ethics of negotiation.

Tulane Law faculty were featured prominently in the program. Martin Davies, Niels F. Johnsen Chair in Maritime Law and director of the Maritime Law Center, participated in a panel on Global Waterways. Özlem Gürses, professor of maritime law and deputy director of the Maritime Law Center, spoke on “Reallocating Risk in Maritime Contracts under US and UK Law.” Gürses, who joined the faculty earlier this year, is a leading scholar in marine insurance and emerging risk. The two also presented together during a luncheon session, “The Two Tenures: An Academic Interlude.”

Tulane Law students were also actively engaged throughout the Institute, attending panels and connecting with attorneys and industry leaders at networking events. Their participation reflects the Law School’s strong ties to the maritime law community and its commitment to hands-on learning.
