Art Meets Environmental Law in Interactive Workshop

Professor Rebecca Bratspies and artist Charlie La Greca Velasco are using visual storytelling to explore environmental challenges and how communities can respond. Soon, they’ll give Tulanians the chance to help tell those stories, too.

On Oct.28, Bratspies, the Oliver Houck Chair in Environmental Law, and La Greca Velasco will lead an interactive event featuring their collaborative work, the award-winning Environmental Justice Chronicles. The comic book series introduces readers to environmental justice challenges facing urban communities while illustrating strategies for community organizing and advocacy.

Part lecture and part workshop, the event will also explore The Earth Defenders, a graphic novella created in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme. The stories feature characters inspired by real-life situations who take action to protect forests, water, land and air.

Then, attendees will put their own creativity to work, helping develop a new storyline focused on raising awareness of environmental threats in New Orleans.

Through their interdisciplinary collaboration, Bratspies and La Greca Velasco will demonstrate how art and storytelling can complement legal and community-based approaches to environmental justice.

Join us Oct. 28th from 3 to 5 p.m. in Room 257 at Tulane Law School. Register for the event here.
