Tulane alumna and top Google lawyer to speak at environmental law summit

Senior Corporate Counsel at Google Ruth Ann Castro (L'00) is the keynote speaker of the 24th annual Environmental Law & Policy Summit Friday, March 22 and Saturday, March 23,  the  annual meeting of top scholars in environmental science, law and policy at Tulane Law School.

The student-run event features panels and speakers, and is approved for continuing education credits (CLE). Featured panels will explore environmental ethics, the state of bee populations, coastal water issues, plastic straw laws, investing green, pollution control issues and more. 

Castro, who speaks Friday from 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., is a 2000 alumna of Tulane Law School.  At Google, she provides environmental, health, and safety compliance and transactional support for the infrastructure teams that acquire, design, build, and operate the data centers and server equipment that power the company’s services and applications around the globe.

On Saturday at 4 p.m.,  Mark Hertsgaard, environment correspondent for The Nation and the author of eight books, will speak at the Summit as a featured speaker. His books include HOT:  Living Through The Next Fifty Years On Earth and  Earth Odyssey:  Around the World In Search of Our Environmental Future, where he proposed a “Global Green Deal” back in 1999.  His next book is Shot In New Orleans:  A Story of Music, Guns and Race in the Soul of America.  

The event will be held both days at Tulane Law School’s John Giffen Weinmann Hall, 6329 Freret St., in Room 110. 

On the eve of the Summit, Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards kicks off a special event celebrating the Law School’s creation of the new Tulane Center for Environmental Law, the academic engine for Tulane’s leadership in the field.  The event begins at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 21, with the Governor’s keynote address, followed by a panel of distinguished alumni of Tulane’s environmental law program. 

Both events are free and open to the public.
