Tetley Lecture on maritime law to focus on big issues for shipping

Tulane Law’s endowed lecture focused on maritime law, the William Tetley Lecture, will be held on Feb. 15 and will explore the latest pressing issues affecting shipping operations throughout the world.

This year’s Tetley Lecturer is Anne Liversedge, General Counsel at Teekay Tankers, and Chair of the Intertanko Documentary Committee.  The lecture will take place from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in Room 110 of the John Giffen Weinmann Hall, 6329 Freret St.

A reception will follow.

Titled "The Latest ‘Big’ Thing(s) in Shipping - the In-House View,” Liversedge in her lecture will discuss the top issues affecting ship operations, including the International Maritime Organization’s new decarbonization regulations (which went into effect at the start of 2023), and Russian sanctions.

Liversedge joined Teekay Corporation in 2006, first serving as  Associate General Counsel, Legal & Taxation. Prior to joining Teekay, Liversedge was a partner at the law firm Thomas Cooper in London and has also spent time with Assuranceforengen Skuld (P&I Club) and with another major tanker owner. She has more than 25 years of legal experience, specializing in the maritime and offshore sectors, and is qualified to practice law in England and Wales.  Liversedge has a master’s degree in maritime law and is registered as a solicitor with the Law Society of England and Wales.

Liversedge is the Chair of the INTERTANKO Documentary Committee, which drafts customized charterparty clauses for special circumstances affecting the tanker trade (such as newly-imposed sanctions) and gives advice to tanker operators about emerging legal issues.

In 1999, the Maritime Law Center established the William Tetley Lecture in Maritime Law in honor of the late Professor William Tetley, a Professor at McGill Law School in Montreal. The Lecture was later endowed by a gift from Tetley himself and continues to operate under the direction of the Maritime Law Center. A distinguished Canadian maritime lawyer with a towering international reputation, Tetley was the author of many widely-acclaimed books and articles on maritime law, including Marine Cargo Claims, and International Conflict of Laws: Common, Civil and Maritime.

He had several distinguished careers, first as a practicing lawyer, then as a politician, and later as a professor at the faculty of law at McGill University in Montreal. From 1984 to 1998, he taught a mini-course each year in the admiralty program at Tulane University Law School, “going south each winter like a Canada goose,” as he always said.

Professor Tetley passed away on Canada Day in 2014 and is fondly remembered by all who knew him.
