The legal challenges of climate change will be the subject of the Eason-Weinmann Lecture Feb. 19

The legal hurdles and opportunities of negotiating global climate change initiatives is the subject of the 2024 Eason-Weinmann Lecture Feb. 19.

This year’s lecturer is Dr. Jutta Brunnée, Dean of the University of Toronto School of Law, a world-renowned authority on international environmental law whose lecture is titled “International Law of Climate Change:  From the Negotiating Table to the Courtroom?”

The lecture will be held at 5 p.m. in the law school’s John Giffen Weinmann Hall, 6329 Freret St. in Room 110, followed by a reception in the Marian Mayer Berkett Multipurpose Room. The public is invited to attend.

Brunnée has widely published on public international and environmental law and international legal theory, and the focus of her research is the role of international law and legal practices in mediating stability and change across the world. Brunnée is co-author of  International Climate Change Law (OUP 2017), which was awarded the American Society of International Law’s 2018 Certificate of Merit “in a specialized area of international law” and was recently translated into Korean, and of Legitimacy and Legality in International Law: An Interactional Account (CUP 2010), which was awarded the American Society of International Law’s 2011 Certificate of Merit “for preeminent contribution to creative scholarship.

Brunnée also is co-editor of the Oxford Handbook of International Environmental Law (Oxford University Press, 2007). In 1998-99, she was the “Scholar-in-Residence” in the Legal Bureau of the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, advising, inter alia, on matters under the Biodiversity and Climate Change Conventions. From 2006 to 2016, she served on the Board of Editors of the American Journal of International Law.

Brunée was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2013, and Associate of the Institut de Droit International in 2017. In 2019, she delivered a course on “Procedure and Substance in International Environmental Law” at The Hague Academy of International Law,  published in the Academy's Collected Courses / Recueil des Cours series (2020).

The Eason-Weinmann Lecture is funded by the Eason Weinmann Center for International and Comparative Law, established in 1981 through the generosity of Virginia Eason Weinmann and John Giffen Weinmann, a distinguished Tulane Law School graduate (L'52). Ambassador Weinmann was the former Chair of Tulane's Board of Administrators, and the law building is named for him. The Center is co-directed by Professor Vernon Valentine Palmer and Professor Jörg Fedtke.
