Our experiential learning program helps students develop practical skills to complement their coursework. Through partnerships with practitioners, alumni and faculty, Tulane offers opportunities like Intersession boot camp, legal clinics and externships to provide hands-on training that enhances the typical classroom experience.
Professional Skills
As part of Tulane’s enhanced focus on experiential learning, professors not only incorporate skills-building exercises into traditional courses but offer dedicated courses to enhance our students' practical skillsets in order to better prepare them for their jobs following law school. Some of our more prominent skills-based courses include our trial advocacy and negotiation & mediation advocacy programs, our Intersession Boot Camp, and our Externship programs.
Clinics
Our clinical programs will put you face-to-face with clients as a student attorney negotiating with contending parties and litigating before courts and agencies. Under the direction of supervising faculty, you’ll investigate cases, take depositions and handle judicial, administrative and legislative proceedings.
Externships
Tulane provides externship opportunities in state and federal courts, government bodies and public interest organizations. The externship program offers semester- and year-long field placements for third-year students, as well as summer placements for rising second- and third-year students. You have the option to complete summer externships locally, nationally or internationally, with the freedom to develop skills in a range of areas.
Pro Bono Service
In September 1987, Tulane Law School became the first U.S. law school to require its students to perform community service. Today, each student completes a minimum of ungraded 50 hours of legal service on behalf of indigent clients in the New Orleans metropolitan area or in the student’s home or summer community.
