Peace by PIEC: Raising Awareness One Film at a Time
A documentary series addressing local, national, and international issues, presented by the SBA’s Public Interest Executive Committee of Tulane University Law School.
Performances will take place nightly, Monday, March 2 - Friday, March 6, 2009, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.
• Monday, March 2, 2009 – DEADLINE and GUEST SPEAKER SAM SWEENEY

The National Lawyers Guild presents an Emmy nominated film that tackles the volatile topic of the American capital punishment system with intelligence, compassion and balance. Furthermore, they capture the extraordinary transformation of one man who holds the power of life and death in his hands. Sam Sweeney, attorney with the Capital Post-Conviction Project of Louisiana will speak on his experience with capital post conviction appeals process in Louisiana. Kristin Wenstrom is an attorney and Tom Lowenstein is an investigator from the Innocence Project New Orleans, will also discuss the criminal justice system in New Orleans.
• Tuesday, March 3, 2009 – MISSISSIPPI CHICKEN and GUEST SPEAKER FROM THE CONGRESS OF DAY LABORERS
Tulane Law School's Weinmann Hall (6329 Freret Street, Room 257)
La Alianza del Derecho, the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund, and the Public Interest Executive Committee present a film addressing questions of race, workers’ rights and exploitation of immigrants in rural Mississippi. The representative from the Congress of Day Laborers will address the plight of immigrant workers and organizing immigrant labor on the Gulf Coast.

The International Law Society, the Human Rights Law Society and the Public Interest Executive Committee present, an Academy Award nominated film on Iraqis living under the U.S. Occupation.
• Thursday, March 5, 2009 – THIRD WARD TEXAS and
GUEST SPEAKER STEPHANIE MINGO
Freeman School of Business (7 McAlister Dr., Room 140)
The Real Estate Law Society and the Public Interest Executive Committee present a film on the “Project Row Houses,” a story of reviving a historically black neighborhood rich with historical significance and saving it from developers with deep pockets. Ms. Stephanie Mingo is a former public housing resident and has been at the forefront of the struggle for affordable housing in New Orleans.
• Friday, March 6, 2009 – JENA 6 and GUEST SPEAKER JESSE MOHAMMAD

The Black Law Student Association, the Human Rights Law Society and the Public Interest Executive Committee present a film on the racial inequality and violence in rural Louisiana and the story of six families fighting for their sons’ lives. Mr. Jesse Mohammad is a journalist and activist, credited with bringing the story of the Jena 6 to national and international attention. Mr. Muhammad was instrumental in organizing efforts around the Jena 6 and is currently following a similar case in Paris, Texas.
Free concessions will be available each night.
