Council Transition Project 2018

The Council Transition Project is co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters of New Orleans, the Norman Francis Leadership Institute at Xavier University, and the Institute of Politics at Loyola University.

With five newly-elected members and a one-time-only transition period of five months leading to their May 7 inauguration, this year’s unique circumstances provided a powerful opportunity to implement an unprecedented program of transition support.

We began with informational briefings for Council members and their staff, who received presentations on the following dates and topics:

January 11:
“Open Meetings Law”—Sharonda Williams and David Marcello
“Public Records Act”—Sharonda Williams and David Marcello
“Homeless Service Delivery Network”—Martha Kegel

 February 6:
“City Ethics Code”—David Marcello
“Louisiana Code of Governmental Ethics”—Kathleen Allen

The work will continue through Inauguration Day on May 7, 2018 and may be extended to offer training for new Council staff, after their arrival in City Hall.

The Council Transition Project is supported in part by a $10,000 lead grant from the Helis Foundation, but we need additional funds to conduct sessions requested by Council members.
