Tulane Black Law Alumni Reunion shines spotlight on lawyers on the move

Tulane Law’s 2nd Black Law Alumni Reunion celebrated distinguished alumni with first-ever awards, addressed issues of importance in a two-day panel series and emphasized the importance of building a legacy of diversity at the law school during events Feb. 2-5.

From hearing from former President and Director-Counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund Sherrilyn Ifill, who was the BLA reunion keynote,  to panels that explored diversity in the profession, to networking for students and a new Tulane Law scholarship in environmental law and policy, the more than 300-participant reunion was replete with enrichment and opportunities for professional connection.

With a theme of "Black Lawyers on the Move", the event also had plenty of celebration, particularly during the Tulane BLSA soiree and a closing jazz brunch where alumni were honored with the inaugural Black Law Alumni Awards. Over four days, participants met and mingled with alumni across the decades, including those who were early pioneers in attending law school.

"The Black Law Alumni Reunion is a flagship program right in line with the excellence our institution has achieved," said alumnus Brandon Davis (L'05), now a partner with Phelps Dunbar, who took part in the weekend events. "Great job!"  

The February BLA reunion was the second in four years and was delayed in 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The inaugural reunion in 2019 celebrated the achievement of the law school’s Black lawyers and focused on the 50th anniversary of its first Black graduate, the late-Michael Starks (L’68).
