Biography
Özlem Gürses is a Professor of Maritime Law who joins Tulane Law School in January 2026. Prior to her appointment at Tulane, she served as a Professor of Law at King’s College London.
Gürses specializes in maritime and insurance law. Her notable publications include Marine Insurance Law (3rd ed., 2023), Reinsuring Clauses (2nd ed., 2026), and The Compulsory Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance (2019). She is also the editor of Volume 4, Marine Insurance and General Average, in the Edward Elgar Encyclopedia of Maritime and Oceans Law.
She earned her undergraduate degree in law from the University of Istanbul, where she later worked as a research assistant. She pursued postgraduate studies at the University of Southampton, completing both an LLM in Maritime Law and a PhD in Reinsurance Law. Her academic career includes positions as Lecturer at the University of East Anglia and Senior Lecturer at the University of Southampton.
Gürses has held visiting professorships at several international institutions, including the National University of Singapore, Singapore Management University, the Universities of Melbourne, New South Wales, Hamburg, and the City University of Hong Kong.
She currently chairs the Reinsurance Working Party of AIDA and serves on the British Insurance Law Association Committee.
