Tulane Sports Law Speakers Series draws top-notch talent in athletic world

Each year, Tulane sports law students put one of the country’s most robust speakers series, attracting the leading legal minds in collegiate and professional athletic teams, as well as entertainment and licensing companies.

“The Speaker Series is an opportunity for our members to learn about the wide variety of career paths they can pursue in the sports industry,” said Schuyler Corbin (L’22), Tulane Sports Law Society President. “Beyond the opportunity to learn during the speaking engagements, they also provide an invaluable networking opportunity––many students will follow up with the panelists and build professional relationships.”

This year was no different, COVID-19 pandemic or not.

The Speakers Series Chair Elizabeth “Lizzie” Snyder (L’23) said each panel was timely, and impressive.

“The sports law world is small. It’s been a privilege to hear from such talented individuals from all corners of the industry and how they’ve been successful after law school.”

In September, the panel featured NBA/WNBA teams and the league:

  • Peter Dinwiddie - EVP, Basketball Operations at the Philadelphia 76ers;
  • Alicia Holden - Associate Counsel - Technology, Events and TMBO at the NBA
  • Frank Pulice - EVP & Chief Legal Officer at Pacers Sports & Entertainment
  • Suzanne Spellacy - General Counsel, Minnesota Timberwolves & Lynx

The second fall panel featured the Fanatics, Inc. team (specifically, the group that works on Fanatics College sports licensing):

  • Derek Eiler - Executive Vice President, Fanatics College
  • Jim Aronowitz (L’98) - Vice President - Legal Affairs & Brand Protection
  • Brooke McKeown - Assistant Legal Counsel

The third event took place in late October, featuring the Altius Sports Partners team. ASP is a third party in the Name, Image, and Likeness space which provides consulting, education and other services for universities as they navigate NIL and how to best help their student-athletes:

  • Courtney Brunious - COO
  • Carly Tower - Account Executive

In early November, the Sports Law Society hosted the 2nd Annual Agency Summit which brough panelists from the sports agency world. Among them:

  • Jonathan Wall, NBPA Certified Agent at The Familie
  • Tay Hawker, President - Hawker Family Sports & Entertainment
  • Lauri Eberhart, Founding Member of Apollo Sports & Entertainment Law Group
  • Bynum Jaeger (L'14), Vice-President at Harlan Sports Management.
