Our Mission

The Tulane Maritime Law Journal is a student-edited law journal that includes scholarly works written by academics, practitioners, and students concerning current topics in admiralty and maritime law. This includes an annual section in international maritime law as well as periodic symposia on relevant topical areas in the field and quantum and collision surveys every other year. Published three times per year in print and once online, the Journal publishes scholarly works written by academics, practitioners, and law students. Readership spans over thirty-five countries, including private admiralty law firms, marine insurance companies, shipping lines, federal agencies, law school libraries, federal judges, and the United States Supreme Court. The Tulane Maritime Law Journal Online is published annually in the summer and features selected case notes written by Tulane law students.

The TMLJ was founded in 1973 and first published in 1975 as The Maritime Lawyer. Originally founded in conjunction with Tulane's student-run Maritime Law Society, the journal established its independence from the society in 1977 and in 1987 the name was changed to Tulane Maritime Law Journal to reflect its status as a student-edited law journal. The journal has included an annual section on international maritime law since 1997. Five volumes of the TMLJ have been cited by the United States Supreme Court (13, 17, 18, 20, 35).

The 2025-2026 academic year will mark 50 years of the TMLJ.

Submissions

Author Guidelines
The Tulane Maritime Law Journal (TMLJ) accepts submissions from law school graduates in the United States and abroad. The print Journal publishes three times per year with issues in winter, spring, and summer. The supplemental online-only issue is published annually in the summer and features notable student-written pieces. Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year.

TMLJ strives to provide readers with the kind of scholarship they cannot find elsewhere that will be practically useful in their daily practices. To that end, we publish many articles on commercial maritime law in any nation and on private international law, while submissions focusing solely on law of the sea or public international law will be carefully weighed in terms of their practical application to our readers.

Submissions via Scholastica, an online submission-based system, or email submissions are preferred. Emailed submissions can be sent to our Senior Articles Editor Evan Pham at epham1@tulane.edu.

Hard copies may be sent to our address, c/o the Senior Articles Editor at:
