Tulanians Explore Global Migration Law at Cambridge
At the intersection of history, tradition, and global legal challenges, Tulane Law’s Cambridge Program offers students a unique opportunity to study refugee and migration law at one of the world’s top universities.
The program is offered through Trinity College at Cambridge University, giving students the opportunity to learn from both Cambridge and Tulane Law faculty. With courses like “Comparative Asylum and Refugee Law” and “International Migration and Human Rights: Law, Policy, and Practice,” students engage with concepts that directly address the cutting-edge legal issues surrounding refugees and migration.
“The Law School has been at Trinity since the early 1980s,” said Program Director Professor Stephen Griffin. “It’s one example of our relationship with prestigious universities worldwide and was built on the solid foundation of our expertise in comparative law.”
Outside the classroom, students immerse themselves in the UK legal system. This year, they observed live proceedings at the Royal Courts of Justice in London, including a defamation trial, a protest-related injunction, and a criminal sentencing appeal. They even lunched among barristers at the Middle Temple, one of the Inns of Court dating back to the 1300s.
For many students, the program offers both a professional milestone and a personal journey. “I came to Cambridge because the subject matter of immigration and migration is what I am particularly interested in,” said rising 2L Nolan Ruark. “The opportunity to study these topics at such a beautiful place was something I could not pass up.”
“I wanted the opportunity to study at one of the best universities in the world,” added Colin Manthey (rising 2L), “and learn from professors across different schools about immigration and asylum law, both in the United States and abroad.”
For Simone Unger (rising 2L), it was the community that stood out. “Everyone has been so welcoming, letting us into the Trinity club for two weeks. It really feels like Tulane Law School is a part of something here.”
With its focus on timely global issues, its prestigious academic home, and its commitment to experiential learning, the Cambridge Program is a testament to Tulane Law’s mission: preparing students to think and lead in a complex, interconnected world.
