Former state House Speaker and Tulane Law alum Jimmy Dimos has died

Former Louisiana House Speaker and Tulane Law alumnus Jimmy Dimos (L’63), who served six terms in the state legislature, has died at the age of 84.

Dimos, a former legislator from northeast Louisiana who served a term as Speaker of the House during the administration of former Gov. Buddy Roemer, died last week after a short illness. He was a longtime insurance agent and real estate attorney who rose to serve 24 years in the state legislature and later served as a state judge.

Dimos and his family emigrated to the U.S. from Macedonia, part of the former Yugoslavia, in the 1950s. He graduated from Neville High School in Monroe, and later the University of Louisiana at Monroe, where he received his bachelor’s degree.  After graduating from Tulane Law in 1963, he joined the firm McKeithen, Mouser and McKinley.

Dimos was first elected to the District 16 House seat in Ouachita Parish in 1975. After leaving the legislature, Dimos served as a state court judge from the 4th Judicial District, which covers Ouachita and Morehouse parishes before retiring in 2007.
