Tulane Law Constitution Day event Sept. 17 honors Brown v. Board of Education’s 70th

Tulane Law School is hosting accomplished civil rights litigator Victor Jones, Senior Counsel at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, during its annual Constitution Day event Sept. 17.

Jones will lecture on“Access to the Courts as a Vehicle for Social Change,” part of a three-part series honoring the 70th anniversary of the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision. The Constitution Day lecture will take place in the Wendell H. Gauthier Moot Court Room 110 at John Giffen Weinmann Hall, 6329 Freret St., at 5 p.m. A reception will follow in the Marian Meyer Berkett multipurpose room. 

As Senior Counsel at the Legal Defense Fund Defense (LDF), Jones litigates school desegregation and other education cases in federal courts. Through his efforts as a school desegregation attorney, he has helped thousands of schoolchildren in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama obtain the equal educational opportunities they are constitutionally entitled to receive as recognized by the Supreme Court in Brown v. Board of Education.

Prior to joining LDF, Jones served as Executive Counsel for the Louisiana Board of Regents, where he developed statewide legislative and administrative policies to ensure the continuation of post-secondary education in Louisiana at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. He also was a Senior Supervising Attorney for the Southern Poverty Law Center, where he led the Louisiana Children Right’s Practice Group.

Between 2012 and 2018, Jones was a litigation associate at multi-disciplinary law firms in New Orleans. During his time as a corporate attorney, he was awarded the Pro Bono Century Award by the Louisiana State Bar Association for his representation of children in child welfare proceedings in the Greater New Orleans Area.

Jones received his J.D. from Loyola University New Orleans College of Law. While in law school, he was a judicial extern for the Honorable Ivan L.R. Lemelle of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. He also holds a Master’s Degree in Education from Harvard University and a B.A. in Literature from Xavier University of Louisiana.
