Biography

Mark Wessman, a Tulane law faculty member since 1987, became the Thomas J. André, Jr. Professor of Law Emeritus upon his retirement in 2024. 

Wessman specializes in contracts, secured transactions and bankruptcy law. He has co-authored successive editions of a textbook on secured transactions and has written articles on the doctrine of consideration and general contract theory. He also has been a visiting faculty member at the University of North Carolina School of Law, the University of South Carolina School of Law and New York Law School.

Before starting his teaching career, he clerked at the U.S. District Court in California and practiced commercial litigation in Atlanta, Georgia.

The graduating classes of 1991 and 1999 chose him for the Felix Frankfurter Award for Distinguished Teaching, the law school’s most prestigious teaching honor.
